Trek , headquartered in Waterloo, Wisconsin, has come a long way since their 1976 start making touring frames in a barn that formerly housed a carpet warehouse. Now Trek is the world's largest producer of shop-quality bicycles, with extensive road, mountain, hybrid, and children's lines. Their carbon OCLV frames have been ridden to many victories by
Specialized Bicycle Components started making high-end bicycle components and accessories in 1974, and in 1981 introduced the StumpJumper, the first widely available mountain bike. Their bicycles have carried to victory, among others, the apparently indestructable Ned Overend, and super-sprinter and fashion outlaw Mario Cipollini.

Gary Fisher is credited with coining the term "mountain bike" in 1979, that same year founding MountainBikes, the first builder to specialize in off-road designs. In 1983, MountainBikes folded, marking the beginning of the Fisher we know, still building sensible, sturdy bikes today.
Haro started making number plates for the new BMX racing crowd in 1978, but Bob Haro is best known for more or less inventing freestyle BMX and the equipment to go with it, Still a dominating force in the industry, Haro riders include Dave Mirra and Ryan Nyquist.
